It’s true what they say – necessity is the mother of invention. When a problem presents itself, it takes an innovator to solve it. 19-year-old inventor Ann Makosinski recently made Forbes’ Top 30 under 30 did just that using some creative electrical engineering and thermoelectric generators.
How Electrical Engineering Helped This Inventor
The second is a mug that also uses thermal electricity and some creative electrical engineering to power your phone battery through the heat of your coffee by thermoelectric generators that harness excess heat and converts it to power for your phone or music device. Furthermore, this invention landed her a guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she showed off her creation and gained international attention. The e-Drink mug is currently a functioning prototype, and she hopes that once she gets her Hollow Flashlight into production this year that she will have more time to work on the mug with some professional electrical engineers (Hey Ann, if you’re reading this, we know some of the best electrical engineering minds!).A current student at the University of British Columbia, has created not one but TWO awesome inventions all while still in school! The first is a flashlight that uses innovative electrical engineering and harnesses thermal electricity as the source of power. More simply, you power this LED flashlight by the heat of your hands. Her inspiration was ignited after she learned of a friend living in the Philippines who fell behind in school because she didn’t have light to study at night.
From One Inventor to Another
Self described as a tinkerer, she credits her inventive personality to not having many toys as a child. As a result, she would take garbage and glue it together trying to solve some sort of problem. “The idea of creating things with the resources around me was always there from the start. And then I did 10 science fairs from Grade 6 to Grade 12, so I was just making things constantly.”
Finally and for the readers possibly most noteworthy, Ann Makosinski imparts the next generation of youth entrepreneurs and inventors with a powerful message. “What I kind of want to spread as my message to all kinds of youth that I get to reach out to is, you can do cool stuff, you’ve just got to put in time and be dedicated,” she said. No matter what it is, whether you want to go into electrical engineering or creative design, you must work for it.
