Prototype designs are extremely important when bringing a new idea to life. The Engineers at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology seem to know this and have created a prototype design that will improve the quality of life of individuals. They have developed a prototype called iDETECT, which stands for Integrated Display Enhanced Testing for Cognitive Impairment.
This prototype design is geared toward athletes and the military and helps to assess mild brain injury. It can detect concussions on the spot and signifies if the individual should receive further medical attention through its testing.
iDETECT is a portable and easy-to-use head-worn display that uses noise-cancelling headphones to isolate the individuals. The individual being tested is then given a controller that is connected to the headset, which is used to test their responsiveness. This is crucial for athletes or armed forces, as they often fall or are hit in the head. Many will not think twice about their head injury and brush it off, when in reality, it could pose a significant health issue.
The Next Stage of this Prototype Design
iDETECT’s prototype design was awarded the Head Health Challenge II, which is in affiliation with Under Armour and The NFL. This award is given to seven participants who successfully made a prototype design that helps increase brain safety for athletes and members of the armed forces. iDETECT, along with the seven other winners, are awarded $500,000 and will have the chance to win an additional $1,000,000 to further their work with their prototype design.
Having this product go into further development would be a game changer, which is why Under Armour and the NFL have taken a liking to it. MAKO Design + Invent believes the safety of individuals should always be first priority, no matter what the activity, which is exactly what iDETECT achieves. We hope to hear more about this highly innovative product and any other similar product that can shine a new light on safety.
