At MAKO Design + Invent, we love to celebrate and highlight the wonderful successes our clients achieve with the products we help them design! Our Client Spotlights provide insight to current and potential clients into the products we get to design and the brilliant ideas we are approached with by the creative individuals we get to work with.
Among the many products we have helped design, prototype, and produce throughout our 20+ years in the product design and development space is a food invention designed for cheese lovers! Our latest spotlight highlights MAKO Design + Invent’s client Lowell MacLean and his kitchen product, the ‘Cheese Sleeve.’
What is the Cheese Sleeve?
As noted on the packaging, The Cheese Sleeve is the greatest thing since sliced cheese! The Cheese Sleeve is an innovative kitchen product that was ideated by Lowell MacLean. It serves as further proof that most great products offer simple solutions to common problems we face.
After many instances of having trouble keeping the open end of a block of cheese fresh after its first use, Lowell thought to develop a product that would cover this opening in order to preserve the freshness of the cheese.
This product is not only handy in that it helps to keep the cheese from getting stale and hard, but it also helps the user save money in the long run. No more throwing out moldy or stale cheese that has been exposed to the frigid air in your fridge!
The Design Process for the Cheese Sleeve
After coming up with this genius solution to such a frequently encountered problem, MacLean came to the team at MAKO to have his invention idea brought to life! Our Manager of Design Strategy, Rob Colgan, spearheaded this project. He ensured the design of the product was simple and efficient so it could easily slide onto store-bought cheese of any size.
It is the perfect, versatile product for any cheese lover!
The Cheese Sleeve is made of soft, malleable plastic, which affords the user the freedom to stretch the product without fear of breaking it. In addition to allowing cheese blocks of any size to easily fit into it, its flexibility makes it easy to clean, and it is dishwasher-safe!
We made sure that the design, efficiency, quality of material, and function of The Cheese Sleeve were all quick and easy to prototype and design. It’s a perfect example of what we call MVP design at MAKO Design + Invent!

MacLean’s product is currently available at cheesesleeve.com, where you can purchase as many cases as you’d like as a retailer or inquire about other ways to receive his product. Alternatively, you can catch the product being sold at trade shows!
